    Project Details

CNM Scaffolding was appointed to supply, erect, hire, and strike a designed scaffold hanger to provide safe access for essential repairs to the full height of the left wing brick wall at Castle Sewer, Steyning. The scaffold design incorporated a working platform positioned at the base of the brick wall, with the structure tied securely using shear plates and 100mm thunderbolts in accordance with the engineer's drawings and calculations. Ladder access was installed to ensure safe movement on-site, and gates were positioned where required to maintain controlled entry and exit points. To facilitate the works, a temporary closure of the adjacent footpath was implemented, ensuring safety for both the team and the public. This project carried a unique logistical challenge due to its location alongside tidal waters. The scaffold installation required careful coordination with the client, with operations planned in line with tide schedules to ensure the scaffold could be fixed at the correct height.

This project utilised our scaffolding design & calculations and safe access scaffolding services, delivered to our full range of industry accreditations and safety standards. The project was located in West Sussex, one of our key service areas across the south coast.

    Project Challenges

Working beside tidal waters created a significant challenge for this project. The team had to carefully plan the sequence of works in accordance with tide times, ensuring the scaffold could be safely fixed and maintained during appropriate windows. This demanded flexibility, precision, and proactive communication between the scaffolders, the client, and other contractors on site. Despite these complexities, the project was managed effectively, and progress was maintained without compromising safety.

    Health & Safety

Health and safety formed the foundation of this project. Every stage of the scaffold design and installation was undertaken in strict compliance with the engineer's specifications and industry regulations. The use of shear plates and 100mm thunderbolts ensured the structure remained stable throughout the six-week hire period. Additional measures, including controlled access points and footpath closures, were introduced to safeguard operatives and the public.
